Solkadhi, Sundays & SoBo Memories

From South Bombay to Calgary: Two Dreamers Bringing Authentic Maharashtrian Flavours to Calgary.

Listen!  I was raised by a Malwani mom, which means every Wednesday and Sunday, our home had to have nonveg. I mean, what is life without fish fry and rice? And how could a meal ever end without Solkadhi?

I was born and raised in Shivaji Park, Dadar and Gaurav was born and raised in Girgaum, Charni Road, so our soul belongs to Mumbai. South Bombay kids for life, if you know, you know! Soulkadhi is our way of staying connected to what makes our soul happy and for us, that's food.

The non-vegetarian part of the menu is what I grew up eating and the vegetarian part is what Gaurav grew up eating. Soulkadhi is the union of our childhood food. As a chef at Soulkadhi, my standard for Solkadhi has to match my mom’s, fresh coconut milk, tangy amsul (kokum), garnished with freshly chopped cilantro. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I really shouldn’t be writing this late at night or maybe I should just keep some Solkadhi at home for emergency cravings.

I’ve been away from home (Mumbai) for many years now, but nothing brings me as much joy as my mom’s food. So, as a chef, if I were to choose one thing to feed someone, it has to be my mom’s food.

Aai cha haatcha (a mother's touch) has its own magic and I truly believe every mom pours her love into food along with the knack of overfeeding you! That’s exactly what we’d love to do with Soulkadhi, feed you with love and nostalgia, because we know what it feels like to miss home.

And of course you’ll still miss your mom and her food but at least, you won’t have to miss Maharashtrian food in Calgary.

We’ll be here, cooking for you.
